Guzheng

About

The guzheng has a long history tracing back as far back as the Warring States Period (BC403-221) and is the ancestor of the Japanese koto, the Mongolian yatga, the Korean gayageum, and the Vietnamese đàn tranh.

In the early years, the guzheng was fitted with 12 strings made of twisted silk. The modern day guzheng has 21 to 25 strings made of steel and copper wound with nylon.

The guzheng produces sound much like a guitar, with strings on bridges over a resonant wood cavity. Unlike a guitar, the guzheng is tuned to a pentatonic scale. Some of the techniques used to play the guzheng include plucking, vibratos, and tremolos.

The sound of the guzheng is often described as evoking the sense of waterfalls, thunder, love, mourning, war, celebration, dance, dusk or dawn. The guzheng is uniquely elegant and expressive.
